Why We Gather

She Opened the Door is designed for Columbians at every stage—alumni, students, faculty, and affiliates—who are seeking insight, inspiration and connection to lead healthy, creative, and equitable lives. She Opened the Door conferences are anchored in lived experience, expert knowledge, and a commitment to empowerment.

More than a conference, this is a community-powered gathering for personal growth and collective impact. At our core, we celebrate the legacy of Winifred Edgerton Merrill, the first woman to receive a Columbia degree, by continuing to open doors: for ideas, for stories, for each other. Through rich programming, storytelling, and connection, the SOTD conference unites Columbians from across schools, generations, and geographies every two years back on Columbia’s campus to share in a space of reflection, recognition, and learning.
